Never mind #12 and #13: #8 is an excellent photo in and of its own right.
Black and white does things for photos that otherwise wouldn't work in colour. Which is not to say that shooting in BW is easier, or that converting to BW is an easy way out (although I've shot mostly in BW), but perhaps to say that colour is much harder to use right.
I find that my main challenge shooting in colour is to get that punchiness in the image. BW gets around that by reducing the elements the brain needs to process, and allowing the composition to come through clearer - perhaps creating the illusion of stronger composition by removing distractors.
