SinGAPorean-ness
Just got back from the press conference for CAGES the movie. Quite a good one: great turnout, good food, tons of post-conference interviews. About an entire CF card's worth of photographs. And I'm probably going straight to Hell for introducing the term 'Rubba-oke'* to a trio of young girls.
Only problem: some of a questions posed were a tad moronic. Like: "How is this movie a 'Singaporean' movie?"
Excuse me? I don't know, lady, maybe it will not have the sappy, melodramatic, over-the-topness of Taiwanese movies; the triad-flavoured, melodramatic, over-the-topness of Hongkong movies; or the stoic, melodramatic, over-the-topness of Korean movies?
Why does it matter?
And why such a hang-up over 'Singaporean-ness'? Can we even define what it means to be Singaporean? Maybe the STB can help: what is Uniquely Singapore, pray tell?
* Rubba-oke. Like karaoke, but more rubbing.

Might want to get someone to proof read the cages website - what is the "proper location permit for this arena" or indeed how does one indulge in "clearing the thrash" - using Canistan?

Just realised that I've referred to the movie I'm working on as 'cages the movie' in both posts.
Must be due to the lack of sleep.

The only locally made one I have a vague impression of was really 2 or 3 hours of boozing, chain smoking (and sharing cigs), speaking in Hokkien, making a fool out of yourself, and not having a job. That's probably the soul of a Unique Singaporean. I don't know which of the No-Enoughs it was, but it might as well be Good No Enough.

Yeah, but that's sad.
Despite what the gahmen says, I'm not a Heartlander, so don't lump me among the hoi polloi.
And this, after the revelation about social class in Singapore. Gasp!
